After the Last Supper and before Gethsemane, Jesus Christ delivered a series of discourses to his closest friends. In one of them he poignantly declared, "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends" (John 15:13). This declaration puts his atoning suffering, death, and resurrection in a movingly personal light: Jesus did not only submit to an unfathomable ordeal and die for the world and all humanity in a general sense, although this is certainly true- he died for us because he loved us. As we accept the sacrifice, we are no longer just his servants but also his friends.

As disciples of Jesus Christ use the scriptures to walk with the Lord through his final days, we will know ever more surely the sublime truth that God so loved the world that he sent his Son- as a gift at his birth, as a sacrifice at his death, and as a source of hope at his resurrection.
