Details
Jan began writing poetry as a teenage boy, wandering the hills and seashores of La Jolla, California. Always encouraged by his parents and especially his grandmother Jean Brown Fonnesbeck, a highly educated student of literature. The exigencies of life required, also that he study and develop other commercial skills to raise a family and compete in the world of mammon.
Yet in spite of these obstacles, he explains: "some mysterious force always places words in my head, banging them around until I put them on paper, pushing me, not allowing me to rest until they have been shaped into what this cause deems complete, filling my eyes with tears, leaving me alone for a spell."
He has completed well over 1000 pages of poetry, filling nine volumes now. Poems recounting his journey of life, which now spans seventy years. He has written because he has been driven, as an instrument, to write, jokingly commenting, "Maybe after I have been dead twenty years this poetry will be discovered."
